If you’re one of the thousands of people who have Googled “how do I use a jade roller?”, you’re not alone. I *may* have done the same thing myself when it first landed on my desk, and that’s with 15 years of beauty journalism experience under my belt. Mostly because I was dubious. Surely it had to be trickier than just rolling it over your face? And, what did they do anyway, you know besides look super cute in the bathroom. Well, a lot actually, including de-stressing, de-puffing and firming. We spoke to Desirée Pais, Beauty Editor at the crystal-loving beuaty brand Herbivore Botanicals to give us the golden rules, and explain exactly how to use a jade roller – and why you should.

Why use a jade face roller?

For anyone who’s ever used one, the answer to this is simple: because it feels good. The gentle coolness and facial massage works wonders after a stressful day/episode of GOT. If you’ve had one too many lemonades the night before, it’s nothing short of magical. But all this is just a sidebar to its actual benefits. Desirée explains, “using a facial roller daily can help to improve the circulation and vitality of the skin, which in turn can help to brighten your complexion and skin luminosity. It also helps to firm the look of skin through gentle massage and aids in supporting and draining the lymphatic system (the body’s main major detoxification system), which in turn helps decrease puffiness.” Oh, and if you really want to treat yourself, chuck it in the fridge beforehand for super-soothing cooling feels and pore tightening power.

The right way to roll

One of the things we love so much about the using a jade roller is the ritual in it. You can’t rush a good roll. And this ritual begins just after you’ve applied your serum, or better yet – a face oil – to help the roller glide easily over the skin. Then, as Desirée says, “It’s best to work your way inside-out, starting at the bridge of the nose, moving out to the cheeks, as this helps to drain lymphatic fluid”. And, though YouTube may serve you a million different ways to use your face roller, Desirée says her favourite way is to use it intuitively, wherever her skin (and face) needs it the most.

Jade or rose quartz – what’s better?

Whether you use a jade roller or a rose quartz face roller is more than just colour preference. Each crystal is charged with a different energy so each will bring different holistic benefits to your ritual. Desirée explains, “metaphysically, jade brings peace and harmony, and is known to help reduce stress. It is also one of the most universal healing crystals.” And, according to Chinese medicine, Jade also helps to heal the adrenals and kidneys so if you’re feeling burnt out, this is your guy.

Rose quartz, on the other hand is associated with the heart chakra, which is the perfect accompaniment for a ritual encouraging you to slow down, be kind to yourself and give yourself a little love. “So many skin conditions come from anxiety, depression, and general lack of self-love, which means that through the metaphysical properties of Rose Quartz, we can help increase our own feelings of self-love, which shows on our faces as a glowing, calm, smooth complexion,” says Desirée.
